The best time of the year to get out and be active is just about upon us. For many people, Fall is a starting point or restarting point in their fitness routines. For runners, Fall brings with it the onset of cooler mornings and fresher air, and the return to a regular routine. With summer vacations over and kids returning to school, now is the perfect time to get back at it.

The keys to getting started (or restarted, as the case may be) are to start slowly, set a realistic goal and get someone else involved. It is important to take your time as you progress with your running even if you have fitness from another activity or from running previously. Your body needs time to adapt to the change in activity. Setting a goal will give you something to keep you motivated, and making that goal realistic will help to encourage you once you achieve it.

Lastly, get someone else involved with you. A friend, a partner, or a child. Having someone working with you will make the journey more enjoyable, and you will keep each other accountable. Getting started with a child that is getting ready for cross country is a perfect way to start. Running 1-2km three times a week with them will get you both in shape and ready for that goal event.

When picking a goal event, there are a few things to consider. Does the timeline fit, and can you be ready in time? Is there an appropriate distance for you or your training partners to run? Finally, is the event well organized?

Halloween Haunting has been a staple for many families every fall. On Oct. 26, you will find 750 runners and walkers in Springbank Park completing their goal event for the fall. With a Kiddie Trot, 2k, 5k and 10k, there are options for everyone. And there are prizes for best costumes to top off the day!
