It was another successful competitive season for the cross country team at Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School this fall, as the team competed in several meets, striving to qualify athletes for the WOSSA meet at Fanshawe Golf Course in October, and the OFSAA Championships in Sudbury in November.

A very cohesive team, the Banting runners support each other – all the way from grade 9 through 12.

“Whether you are the first runner in or the last runner in, all team members are there to guide one another,” says Beckie Wright, who has been coaching cross country at the high school for 20 years. “The team’s start line cheer is their signature in school spirit, and the seniors take pride in teaching the new members of the team.”

Banting has long had a successful cross country program, fielding winning teams and athletes in all age groups. And this year was no different, as the athletes competed from September through November. The team practiced daily after school, working not only on form and endurance, but also things like accountability, communication, and team cohesiveness.

“With this will come success and achievement,” says Wright. “Every person on the team has a role, and they know their role is just as important as the role of the person beside them. Our motto is work hard and you will be rewarded.”

And they have been rewarded – both in the standings at meets as well as in developing teamwork skills and lessons that they’ll carry with them after high school.

“They’re really an amazing group of students to work with,” says Wright. “Their hard work, determination and support of one another does not go unnoticed. Great job, everyone, and congratulations on another successful season of cross country. Eat Fresh? Run Fresh, Go Broncos!”
