Traditionally, karate is learned in three categories: basics, kata, and sparring. Basics are fundamental moves such as stances, punches and kicks, blocks, and combinations. Kata (literally ‘form’) is an organized set of moves designed to defend from a specific group of attacks. These first two categories make up the theory aspect of karate.

The practice aspect of karate comes in the form of sparring. Sparring allows for martial artists to test combinations and forms against a live opponent. It becomes the most thrilling learning tool in karate. Sparring is a fantastic workout, a great way to bond with classmates, and potentially something that might save you from trouble. It’s important to note that sparring is NOT a fight to determine a winner or loser, but rather a learning tool.

Everyone who learns karate at some point in time will have to spar. Thus, it’s very important that sparring is done safely. We make sure our students have an intermediate knowledge of our curriculum before entering the ring. Come in and see the difference our experience makes. We have a spacious facility with eight rings, padded mats, fully-trained teachers, and we are an official century retailer so we can order any and all the gear you need.
