PCG promotes playing many sports

Power Cheer Gym is one of the most successful cheer programs in the province, sending countless teams and athletes to the podium over the years. But PCG is firm in its belief that young athletes should play all sorts of sports in the offseason, choosing diversification over specialization.

Early spring is maximum competition time for cheerleading, and the Power Cheer Gym Vipers have been busy on both sides of the border. Close to 120 athletes and family members from the Junior and two Senior teams were in Orlando in March as a tune up before the CE Nationals in Niagara Falls. PCG placed three teams on the podium at Nationals this year. The younger ‘local’ teams also had excellent results at their respective Provincials and Finals, posting their best scores of the season in April to close out the year. The Vipers’ Special Needs team ‘S-10’ also competed at the CE Nationals in April.

The London Knights connected again with the Vipers at FanFest in March, as 30 Viper athletes from all age groups put on a demonstration at Bud Gardens prior to the opening round of the OHL playoffs. Mother Nature was in a great mood that day, and the thousands of fans were treated to plenty of acrobatics and fun for their warm and sunny afternoon pregame.

‘Off-Season’ means play more sports, and the PCG staff firmly believes in the value of having athletes involved in multiple sports and school activities throughout the year. As such, once the competition season wraps up, we encouraged our kids to participate in other sports, summer leagues and camps. The unfortunate norm in the cheer industry (as well as a lot of other youth sports) is to lock members in to 11-month schedules and year round training. Overtraining does NOT produce better athletes, and PCG feels that its athletes greatly benefit from having the freedom to enjoy their childhood, learn multiple sport skills, and not be tethered to the gym.

It is never too late to get involved at the Power Cheer Gym. The fully credentialed, friendly and fun staff and coaches are always available to introduce new athletes to competitive cheer, and families are welcome to come for a visit and test drive us before tryouts! Parents will love our comfortable lounge and reading room overlooking the gym.
