The Power Cheer Gym on Quebec Street is home to the 28-time National Champion Western Mustang Cheerleaders and the PCG Vipers All-Star Competitive Power Cheer Teams. The Viper teams start at age 5 with the ‘Mini’ division and cover numerous age and skill categories through Youth (7-11), Junior (11-14), Senior (14-18) and ‘Open’ (17+).
The spacious gym features two full-sized competition sprung floors, tumble track and a large parents viewing lounge that overlooks the class and practice areas.
Gym owner and Mustangs Head Coach ‘Trace’ started the gym in 1998 as a way to have a fixed location for the ‘Stangs and the CCH Crusaders cheer teams he coached. The ‘all-star’ concept of city-wide teams was in its infancy then, and the Power Cheer Gym Vipers began as one squad drawing from all the London high schools.
The gym now runs 11 teams, including a Special Needs program (starting in September), and has members coming from a wide area (Simcoe, St. Marys, St. Thomas, Chatham) to train with National Team Canada cheer Coach Trace and the fully accredited, certified cheer and gymnastics coaches of PCG.
Athletes who are not cheerleaders but who are interested in simply taking gymnastics/tumbling lessons are welcome, as are the ‘cheer-curious’. Summer Cheer 101 classes are open to team members and first-timers alike.
Registration for classes and all Viper teams is available throughout the year and prospective members who missed the spring tryouts are encouraged to call the gym (519-667-0565) and come by to meet the staff.
