Cheering diversity and opportunity

Charlie Appleton, a CheerStrike athlete, competed at the Cheer Evolution Big East Blast competition in Ottawa in early February.

Cheer is truly for everyone. Meet Charlie Appleton and Brady DeMelo: a pair of 10-year-old boys who are thriving in a sport often thought to be only for girls. Like all other boys their age, Charlie and Brady are full of energy. And, like many other boys, they’ve found a sport they love.

“Being a boy in cheer makes me feel unique,” says Charlie when asked why he loves cheer. “I am proud of my accomplishments and how strong I am. I like cheer a lot. It doesn’t matter to me that I’m a boy, or to my family, my team and my coaches.”

Brady shares similar sentiments.

“I love cheer because you get to meet new friends and travel to competitions,” the young cheer athlete said. “It is fun being part of a team. We work really hard together on our routines.”

At CheerStrike, we pride ourselves in offering programs which allow anyone who loves this sport to participate. We also believe that every parent should get to watch their children participating in something that brings out their best selves.
Explain Brady’s parents, Aimee and Justin: “It is such a joy to watch Brady perform with his team. We are so proud of him for having the courage to do the sport he loves!”

Likewise, Kim and Jeff, Charlie’s parents, love seeing their son supported in doing what he loves.

“Cheer gives us the opportunity to see Charlie engaging in a sport that he loves and that makes him happy,” they say. “In his spare time, what he likes to do for fun is create routines to music. And being a part of cheer allows him to experience this with a larger, supportive group.”
