Ball hockey has been a constant for the Bross household over the last few years, and the family is showing no signs of slowing down. For the last two years, 13-year-old Tyler and 9-year-old Benny have played every season at Ball Hockey International (Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer), and they’ve enjoyed the fun and the competition that the league has to offer.

“I like the different skill levels, and it’s fun,” said Tyler, whose primary position is centre.

“I like that I can improve from it,” said Benny, who also plays centre in addition to sometimes playing in net. “I play ice hockey too, so I can improve my playing there.”

Benny was playing goalie when his team won first place and he was awarded the most valuable player medal. That’s his favourite BHi memory so far. As for Tyler?

“My favourite memory is the year that my team won the mini Stanley Cup,” the elder brother said. “It was the season that my team was behind all season and we won first place.”

The Bross family first learned of Ball Hockey International through an advertisement at the rink about four years ago, says the boys’ mother, Laura. She says the family’s experience has been a positive one, as her boys have enjoyed friendly competition and learned some valuable skills.

“It’s a family organization that provides exercise and sportsmanship training for our kids,” said Laura, who has also played one season herself. “We have seen how our oldest son has developed and matured by playing hockey. He is starting to show some leadership skills.”

Tyler says his teammates would describe him as quiet and fun to play with, while Benny says his teammates would describe him as energetic and fast.

As for goals, Tyler, whose favourite hockey player is Jonathan Toews, says he wants to both have fun and come in first place. Benny, whose favourite NHLer is Chris Letang, says he wants to ‘have fun and beat the blue team.’

Ball hockey has certainly been a family affair for the Bross family, and Laura believes it has been a great experience for all.

“We would definitely recommend BHi to other parents,” she said. “It’s hockey that’s affordable!”
