Sixteen teams battled it out in mid-September at the 20th annual Senior Ryder Cup (SRC) Championship at the Saugeen Golf Club near Port Elgin, Ontario. When the dust settled, the team from Devil’s Pulpit came away as 2018 champions, scoring 23 out of a possible 24 points (the highest point total ever at the SRC event).
Kingsville Golf & Country Club finished a close second with 22 points, while the Brantford Golf & Country Club team was third with 19 points. Two London and area teams, the St. Thomas Golf & Country Club (15 points) and the Highland Country Club (7 points), placed tied for sixth and tied for 11th, respectively.
Each of the participating teams qualified for the SRC Championship through four separate regional playoff events, ensuring that the top talent was on hand at the Saugeen Golf Club.
That includes the two teams from the London area. And while they didn’t come home with any hardware, they certainly fared well at the Championship event. The pairing of Steve Brodie and Brian Bowman from the St. Thomas Golf & Country Club earned six points in their match win, while teammates Jim Foster and Marty Harris racked up five points in their win. The pairing of Mike McKegg and Steve Marks added three points, while Doug Walker and Todd Dougherty, the remaining two players on the eight-man team, chipped in a point to place the St. Thomas contingent in a tie for sixth place.
Meanwhile, London’s Highland Country Club was led by the pairings of Phil Killeen/Chuck Joynt and Durant D’Intino/Jeff VanVliet, who scored three points apiece in their respective matches. The pairings of Steve Stoyanovich/Terry Austin (1 point) and Rob Paton/George Harris rounded out the eight-man Highland team, which finished with seven points to finish in a tie for 11th place.
The Senior Ryder Cup was created in 1999 to provide a tournament for senior men in Southern Ontario who enjoy competitive match play. More than 1,400 senior golfers and 112 golf clubs (expanding to 120 in 2019) are proud members of the Senior Ryder Cup, which is a not-for-profit organization run by a dedicated volunteer group.
