Cheerleading and the return to school go hand-in-hand, but leading up to the symbolic kick-off to the new season, hundreds of cheer athletes trained at the Power Cheer Gym over the summer.
PCG hosts ‘World’s’ teams
Two high-powered training camps were held at PCG over the summer. Our sister gym, Power Cheer Toronto, brought over 120 of their top International division athletes in for an intensive training weekend and retreat. PCG also hosted this year’s Young Gunz world’s team camp, where 80 athletes from the GTA (along with our Level 5 athletes) got their elite seasons underway. We love the ‘cross-pollination’ of ideas when multiple gyms come together to train!
High School cheerleading is dead
Sadly, school-based cheer teams have all but vanished in the London region. But it doesn’t mean that potential cheer athletes cannot get involved. Power Cheer Gym offers three different ability levels (Sr2, Sr3 and Sr5) for the 11 to 18-year-old age range, and September starters are both welcome and encouraged. Ask about the September starter discounts, too.
Entry level/Novice teens
Mystique, the Sr. Level 2 team at PCG, draws athletes from diverse sports backgrounds, including gymnastics, dance, soccer, swimming, and even roller derby. The coaches acknowledge the diversity and invite students of all backgrounds to get involved. No matter what athletic arena you come from, cheerleading might be the next sport for you – particularly if you are currently in a school that no longer runs a cheer program.
Academy
The Academy Circus School operates in the Power Cheer Gym.
“Positive and certified coaches who care about your growth are continually training. With patience, perseverance, passion, and dedication, anything is possible!” says Meaghan Wegg, the Academy director and National Circus School alumna who toured internationally in Cirque du Soleil’s Quidam.
The Academy has been growing exponentially since it opened its doors last year to London’s performing arts enthusiasts, with classes offered in aerial arts (hoop, silks, trapeze), acrobatic arts/contortion, flexibility, tumbling and dance. Now is the time to register for the recreational, competition or performance programs. Visit www.theacademycircus.com for info. To register, email meaghan.coaching@gmail.com.
