Jake Adams’ start to the season was not unlike many other golfers this year — it was slow. However, that didn’t stop the reigning Thames Valley Club Champion from shooting a one over par, 71, to win the fourth annual Thames Valley Labatt’s Invitational.

“I hadn’t been playing well to start the year,” said Adams, who managed to win by just one stroke against a strong field of 95 players. “It has been a slow start for everyone. But everything came together at the right moment.”

Adams certainly knows what it takes to win at “The Valley”, as he will be looking to defend his title of Club Champion an impressive fifth time in a row this August. This, however, was the first time that he has won the Invitational. He has shown that he can win not only against the club’s best members, but also against some strong players from other communities.

Finishing right behind Adams was last year’s winner, Jim Morton, who shot a 72. Though he was unable to win the invite for a third time, he did win a three-way playoff to finish first place in the A flight.

Four players shot 73 in the B flight, which led to another crowded playoff. In the end, Tim Torrens came out on top. The winner of C flight was Bruce Smith, who shot a 77, while Larry George won D flight with a score of 81. Doran Williams took home top prize in the E flight with a round of 86.

With sunny and clear skies, it was a beautiful day for golf and Head Professional and Club Manager Steve Bennett said he has heard nothing but positives following the event.

“It hasn’t been one of the best starts to the season, and that goes for everyone, but the Invitational was great,” said Bennett. “It was the sort of kick start we needed. We had perfect weather, a strong field with close finishes, and the course was in excellent condition. You can’t ask for more than that.”

After bringing back the Invitational four years ago, its popularity only continues to grow. With strong competition and a $5,000 prize table, it is quickly becoming one of the most anticipated tournaments of the season for Thames Valley and the City of London Golf Courses.
