Steve Bennett is starting his fifth year as head pro at Thames Valley Golf Course, and the long-time PGA professional (since 1978) has much to be proud of during his tenure with London Municipal Golf, which also has him overseeing both the River Road and Fanshawe golf courses.
Under Bennett’s leadership, the municipal golf system has rebuilt its membership program. Using feedback from customers as the guiding force, Bennett’s team has created more of a system of golf courses as opposed to a membership to just one course.
“It means more flexibility for our golfers,” said Bennett. “There is unlimited value. Golfers can play any time from Monday to Friday at any course, plus on the weekend at River Road and the Quarry at Fanshawe.”
The goal, Bennett says, is to continue building a system that is accessible and affordable for Londoners.
“Players today don’t want to commit to one club,” said Bennett, who during his lengthy career has attended The Masters and the Canadian Open regularly and also taught Mike Weir. “You can join our system and play 90 holes. It’s better for busy lives, and it’s more affordable.”
The Junior program in the city has been further developed under Bennett’s watch, and there are currently more than 275 junior members in the system. Meanwhile, he has surrounded himself with a great team, including golf pros Rob Vincent and Graham Hegler, and assistant pros Chris Chan, Steve Bridgeland, Chris Snoeks, Briad Hadley and Scott Loosley.
“We’re really serving the needs of our members and improving the experience with our new system,” Bennett said. “And the courses are in great shape. Come on out!”
