Fun. We would all like to have it, so how about making a career out of it? You would be amazed at the opportunities the Recreation and Leisure Services program at Fanshawe College has to offer. With a shift towards a more service-based economy, this program is well positioned to help students develop not only vocational skills, but also many critically important people skills in areas such as leadership, community development and program delivery.

The two-year program explores therapeutic recreation, psychology, program planning, business and financial management, and on and on. The hands-on learning during various events run by the students really tests their skills before graduating. On-site visits to a variety of different career opportunities also help students decide where their careers might lead.

Jeff Sadler, the Programs Coordinator and professor who received the Fanshawe College teacher of excellence award for the year of 2013, expresses his thoughts on the benefits of the program:

“Our program is in the business of building leaders with the necessary skills to make a positive difference in establishing healthy, sustainable and vibrant communities,” Sadler said.

There are numerous career opportunities, and the professors are there to help guide students to their bright futures. Areas such as municipal recreation, private agencies, senior centres, all the way to correctional facilities and special events are just a few of the possibilities. Students will develop essential leadership skills and gain traction in pursuing employment or furthering their education for the vast recreation and leisure service industry.

With professors having experience in different areas of the recreation field, they offer impeccable examples of true leaders and pass the torch on to you. Students notice a great improvement in their self-confidence and graduate with a clearer sense on how to reach their career goals. Are you willing to make fun a career? Or I suppose you could always just sit in a cubical. The choice is yours.
