On the pitch, she’s scored the biggest goals in Canadian soccer history; now, Christine Sinclair will score a goal off the pitch for the Thames Valley Children’s Centre (TVCC). Widely regarded as Canada’s greatest soccer export, Sinclair will bring insights into her legendary career to the London Convention Centre Feb. 12, 2018 for the Start.ca London Sports Celebrity Dinner.
“I am thrilled to be joining other incredible female athletes in London this February,” Sinclair said. “It will be great to learn about and see some of the amazing work done by the TVCC and help raise important funds at the dinner. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone there!”
As the annual fundraiser’s organizing committee began to think about honouring a special lineup of trailblazing female athletes earlier this year, Sinclair was winning a second National Women’s Soccer League Championship with Portland Thorns FC. The trophy, earned this past October, will be added to a burgeoning collection that also includes two Olympic bronze medals and 12 Canada Soccer Player of the Year Awards.
Internationally, Sinclair’s career with the Canadian Women’s National Team is difficult to match. The Burnaby, B.C. native has represented her country for over 15 years, participating in four FIFA Women’s World Cups. The squad’s bronze medal in 2012 was punctuated by some of Sinclair’s most defining moments – a record for goals scored at an Olympic Games and a memorable semi-final hat-trick against the United States.
Sinclair will join retired WWE hall of famer Trish Stratus and the 2018 Sportsperson of the Year, Karen Phibbs, at the head table.
Phibbs has been involved in virtually every aspect of the game of hockey throughout her accomplished career. She was elected to the Ontario Hockey Association Board in 1997, and she made history in 2006 when she became the first female OHA Board Chair in the organization’s history. In 2013, she became the first female Officer (serving as Vice-Chair) in Hockey Canada’s 99-year history, and in 2015 the OHA hired her as its first female President and CEO. She spearheaded the move to make full facial protection mandatory for all 2,800 players at the Junior level, a rule that came into effect this year.
Stratus, a fitness icon, entrepreneur and actress, is a WWE Hall-of-Famer (inducted in 2013) who is recognized as one of the all-time great female wrestlers (she was a seven-time women’s champion). Since her retirement, Stratus has dedicated her life to health and fitness, including her fitness lifestyle brand, Stratusphere.
More celebrity announcements will follow in the coming weeks. February’s event will return to the London Convention Centre for the first time in two years. Audiences can expect the same amount of celebrity interaction, entertainment, and auction packages that have made the event a London staple for over six decades.
