Rugby is my life

I was un-athletic and 200 pounds when my high school started a girls rugby team. My friend asked if I wanted to try out. I laughed at first, but reluctantly agreed to go. That was 17 years ago, and I can’t imagine what my life would be like if I hadn’t gone that day.

Rugby touches everything I do, and I wouldn’t change it for anything. Here’s why…

1) Fitness – I’d never gone for a light jog, never mind play 80 minutes of an intense game! Gradually, I made healthier food choices and achieved a fitness level I’ve been able to maintain for years. I’ve challenged my body to do things I never thought possible.

2) Hard work – Working harder and giving more will get you the results you want. You have to give everything, otherwise you’re going to get walked on; you have to be prepared to do one more rep, one more sprint, one more tackle…

3) Teamwork – Working with others to achieve a common goal isn’t always easy, but when it comes together it’s always rewarding. Teamwork has taught me patience, understanding, and empathy, and has kept me humble.

4) Character & Respect – There are lots of opportunities in sports to ‘play dirty’ or throw cheap shots. But rugby is about respect. Winning with integrity and merit is paramount. This attitude transfers into everyday life and makes me a better person.

5) Inclusivity – No matter your race, religion, sexual orientation or body type, you’re welcome at the rugby pitch. We recognize that having a diverse team is in everyone’s best interest.

6) Confidence – It’s an unfortunate reality, but as a female I need to be aware that I may need to defend myself. Because of rugby, I lack the vulnerability that attackers look for in a victim and feel much more confident in my ability to defend myself.

7) Family – Knowing there’s a large group of people willing to do almost anything for me is overwhelming. Whether it’s an everyday issue or a death in the family, my rugby family has been there. This has to be the reason I’m most grateful for rugby in my life.
