Badminton in London has a newcomer on the scene: The Forest City Badminton Club. Historically, badminton has been a tough sport to find places to play in the city. To combat that, a local badminton player, Richard Lee, and the racquet sports store OF COURTS in London (located at Oxford and Talbot downtown) have decided to start a new program. And the initial target of 60 players to join the club is filling up quickly!
The club will be playing out of various locations throughout the week, but play will start at Beal Secondary School Tuesday nights for three hours. The club is currently looking for another venue to host for 2-3 more evenings per week. A Junior program is a key piece in the foundation of any good club, and that’s why Peter Urkedal, one of the founders of the club, will be looking to have junior nights once or twice per week.
“The best way to grow badminton at the highest level in the city is to start by getting more kids into the game at an early age,” said Urkedal.
But even though there will be a push to recruit juniors to the program later, the Forest City Badminton Club is open to all levels of adult players on Tuesdays. Whether you reminisce about your glory days in high school playing on the badminton team, or if you’ve never picked up a racquet, now is the time to join what is sure to be the most fun club in the city.
