The weekend of Dec. 7-8, Budweiser Gardens played host to the first London Lightning Charity Roundball Classic. The tournament was designed to help local high school youth raise money for a charity of their choice. This year, the funds raised from the tournament went to the Saunders Cancer Campaign.
Catholic Central High School, Saunders Secondary, Westminster Secondary School, Clarke Road Secondary School, Mother Theresa Secondary School, Strathroy District Collegiate Institute, Central Secondary School, and Oakridge Secondary School helped raise money by selling tickets to the London Lightning’s back-to-back weekend games. The finals saw the CCH Crusaders and the Saunders Sabres compete in a hard-fought battle, with the Sabres coming out on top in the end.
Overall, the students raised an impressive $9,000 for the Saunders Cancer Campaign, which will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society. Next year, CCH will be choosing which charity will benefit from the tournament, which the Lightning is excited to host once again.
Meanwhile, the London Lightning is looking forward to welcoming more and more members from the community in 2014. Here are just some of the events we’re looking forward to:
