In the spirit of the season, the Mount Brydges Cougars Peewee Blue team visited a retirement home in mid-December and spread some holiday cheer amongst the residents, as both players and their elders took part in some hockey activities at the social event.
The Country Terrace residence in Komoka was filled with players wearing their Cougars uniforms on December 16, as they spent time socializing with the seniors – and played some hockey! The Peewees (a group of 11 and 12-year-olds) brought sticks, nets and oversized indoor pucks, and enjoyed some wheelchair hockey.
“We’re going to try and give them an opportunity to actually play the sport once again,” said one Cougars player prior to the outing. And that’s exactly what they did, as the retirement residence was filled with smiles all day as the youngsters connected with the seniors through the great Canadian game.
The Cougars produced a YouTube video of the day, and they’re entering it into the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup competition, which promotes youth hockey teams to do good works in their communities. The winning prize of the contest is $100,000 to be given to the charity of the team’s choice – in addition to other neat honours, including a team profile on Hockey Night in Canada.
“We had a great day today with the seniors, and I hope they enjoyed it too,” said another Cougar player in the video, which was filmed by volunteer Chris Regier, a teacher at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School. The Peewees’ head coach, Mario Schembri, was also on hand and proud of his players for giving back to the community.
