This winter, Ally Carr, a standout volleyball player, was named as the newest recipient of the Christie Rose Memorial Award for female athletes, an honour bestowed by the Rose family to a female student who is “a good athlete, strong in academics and has a desire to make the world a better place.”
That is an apt description of the award’s namesake, who attended Parkside Collegiate Institute. Christie Rose passed away, tragically, nearly a decade ago, on June 8, 2008, as a result of injuries suffered in a car accident. In memory of Christie, who was an avid hockey player and a member of the Provincial Women’s Hockey League (PWHL), the award is presented by her family to a young woman who shares Christie’s qualities and characteristics. The award carries with it a scholarship, and more than $35,000 has been provided to 10 female athletes over the last decade.
Carr, this year’s recipient, was a force on the volleyball court at Parkside, where she also competed in cross-country running, lacrosse, field hockey, badminton and track and field. She now attends the University of New Orleans, where she plays beach volleyball for the Privateers and studies biological sciences/pre-veterinary.
For her part, Carr was thrilled to be recognized with the special award.
“It was a tremendous honour that I was even considered for this award, and it’s extremely special as I feel connected to Christie’s legacy and story as a Parkside student,” Carr said. “I am truly honoured and inspired by Christie’s legacy and this award, and I’m also very grateful for the support.”
