It’s one of the best-kept secrets in Old South London, and this spring the Elmwood Lawn Bowling Club is looking to give more Londoners the opportunity to learn about the game and have a great time. ‘Learn to Lawn Bowl’ lessons will consist of four sessions (for $20), from May 19 to June 9. Each session will run from 10:30am to noon.

Do you enjoy sunshine and outdoor activities? Do you want to have FUN while getting some exercise? Do you want low cost entertainment? Then why not come out and check out what lawn bowling is all about!

It truly is a sport for all ages. Lawn bowling provides gentle, healthy exercise and competition in a relaxed social atmosphere. It is perhaps the only outdoor sport where men and women, young and old, ex-jocks and ex-loafers, can all compete on an equal footing.

Everyone is welcome to visit the Elmwood Club, whether it’s just to watch games or join and receive free instruction from experienced coaches. All you need are flat-soled shoes or sneakers (with no heels). Members are welcome to wear whatever clothes suit their style and comfort. The special balls (the bowls) used to play the game can be borrowed from the club. New members normally use the club’s bowls until they decide to purchase a set of their own.

From the latter part of May to mid-Sept., jitneys (the social, mainly-for-fun version of lawn bowls) are organized on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays evenings (7:00 pm), and during the day at 10am. Numerous competitive tournaments are organized at various times and days throughout the summer.

We’re located at 17½ Edward Street, mid-way between Bruce Street and Elmwood Avenue. We celebrated our 100th anniversary in 2011. We encourage visitors, spectators and potential bowlers at all of our events. Drop by, say hello, and stay awhile!
