Bentley Hearing recognizes Sporting Seniors
At the Kiwanis Seniors’ Community Centre, Londoners are taking part in a wide variety of activities, and they’re enjoying the benefits – including better health (physically and mentally) and more social connection. After all, the Centre is geared to help older adults in the Forest City live healthy, active and socially-oriented lives.
What’s on offer at the Centre? Plenty! There are fitness and exercise classes, as well as yoga, which seniors are taking advantage of to help strengthen muscles and improve bone health. And there are activities like craft programs, ceramics, card games, shuffleboard and billiards. The Centre even offers seminars on nutrition and other aspects of health and wellness.
What are a couple of popular activities right now? …
Lawn Bowling
It may be winter, but that isn’t stopping folks at the Kiwanis Seniors’ Community Centre from enjoying lawn bowling – indoors! Elna Kelly is the coordinator of the activity, and she’s been playing the game at the Centre for the last six years. Lawn Bowling happens on Thursday afternoons, and it usually brings out 15 players or so. It may even be expanding to add additional lanes in the coming months. There is no charge to play for members of the Community Centre.
Darts
On Tuesday mornings, the dart boards are the place to be at the Community Centre, as around 50 players consistently come out to enjoy the game. The cost is $1 to play each time, and the timeless game is enjoying popularity among a wide variety of seniors – including Evelyn Nichol, who has been playing at the Centre for the last three years, and John Thornton, a former member of the London Darts League (and past president) who has been playing the game for 75 years!
Memberships at the Kiwanis Seniors’ Community Centre are available per person, and members receive reduced rates on Spectrum programs – as well as on bus trips and for special events. Kiwanis special events are each Friday, which include a meal and entertainment. Facility tours are available on Thursday mornings. Call for more information (519-661-5740).
The Centre also has rooms available for rent (meeting rooms, activity rooms and an auditorium), and the facility is completely wheelchair accessible. Hours of operation are Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm (plus after hours and on weekends for programs and rental groups).
