The Western Mustangs are pleased to welcome Candice Moxley as the new head coach of the women’s hockey program.
“We’re thrilled to have Candice joining our team and continue the success that has established our program into one of the best in the nation,” said Christine Stapleton, Western Director of Sport and Recreation Services. “Candice has a phenomenal depth of experience from across North America, and we’re excited to see her step in and lead our team.”
“I’m really excited to join the Western Mustangs this year,” said Moxley. “The team has had a lot of success the past few years, and I’m looking to help build and grow the program for the future.
“With the team having the success that it’s had over the past few years, we’re looking for that consistency piece and the recruiting piece,” Moxley added. “Every woman that comes into our program, we’re looking to develop them as a player and a person, and ultimately put the best product out on the ice to win hockey games.”
Moxley comes to the Mustangs from the Markham Thunder of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League, where she won the Clarkson Cup last season as an assistant coach.
Prior to her time with the Thunder, she served as the head coach for the women’s hockey team at SUNY Buffalo State from 2013-17, dramatically improving that team during her four years behind the bench. Moxley led the Bengals to the playoffs in each season and earned the first national top 10 ranking in program history in 2016-17.
While at SUNY Buffalo State, Moxley also worked as the video coach for the Canadian National Development Team, winning the Nations Cup in 2015 and 2016. Moxley is currently an assistant coach with the Canadian National Development Team and will continue to serve in that role while at Western.
Moxley also has extensive experience as an elite athlete, receiving a full scholarship to play for Niagara University in Division I. While with Niagara she was named to the College Hockey America Conference All-Academic team on three occasions, was named a CHA Second Team All-Star, and served as a two-year captain with the Purple Eagles. She was a member of the 2002 squad that reached the NCAA Frozen Four.
Following her university playing days, Moxley played three seasons in the CWHL. She also represented Canada on the international stage, playing with the Canadian Ball Hockey Team in 2013, and won a silver medal with Team Canada at the 2014 World Inline Hockey Championships.
Hailing from Markham, Moxley has a multitude of degrees, holding a Bachelor of Science in Business Commerce, a Masters in Business Administration, and Bachelor of Professional Studies from Niagara University. She also completed a Masters in Science Instructional Leadership while at Robert Morris University.
Moxley’s first OUA regular season game is set for October 19, when the Mustangs begin defence of their McCaw Cup title at home against the Queen’s Gaels.
