The Tankard was a special event for many, including Jake Higgs, a Strathroy native who competed alongside skip Rob Rumfeldt (Guelph). The team went 4-6 against the best competition in the province, and the 39-year-old Higgs thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
“There were a lot of friends, family and co-curlers who supported the Tankard, and it was a great feeling to represent the local community,” Higgs said. “There were great crowds all week, and the facility was amazing.”
Serving as lead for Rumfeldt, Higgs was also joined on the team by vice Adam Spencer (Guelph) and 2nd Brad Kidd (Peterborough). The players have known each other for awhile, but only this year hooked up to play together as a team.
Higgs brought to the team good touch and a solid understanding of the game, which served him well in the Tankard, his ninth provincial men’s event. Higgs, whose home club is Ilderton, made the men’s provincial playoffs in Woodstock in 2009, and his goals include getting to the Brier and winning a Canadian mixed title. If that happens, it’ll be alongside his wife, Sara Gatchell, as well as Mark Kean (the most recent men’s provincial champ) and his wife. Next up for the foursome is regional playdowns in late March.
