This year has brought a lot of change to the London Lightning, but one player that has consistently stood out from the rest is veteran Marvin Phillips.
Phillips first came to the Lightning during the 2012/2013 season. That same year, he helped the Lightning win their second consecutive National Basketball League of Canada (NBL) Championship. His dominating presence and intensity on the court also earned him the league’s MVP award that season.
Phillips played collegiately at Claflin and has since competed in leagues around the world, including in Mexico and in the NBA Development League. Last year, Phillips devastated fans when he left the Lightning mid-season to pursue an opportunity in France.
“To my London family, all loved ones, friends and fans: It has truly been a great run here in London. I am thankful for all the love and support you all gave me during my entire stay,” Phillips said in a statement. “I am leaving the team for a great opportunity to advance my career. I am sorry for the unfortunate news, but this is a chance I have to take.”
But after one season in France, Phillips decided that the Lightning was the franchise for him, and he made the decision to return to London. True to his fun-loving ways, Phillips wrote a rap song for the fans in London, letting them know he would be returning to the Forest City.
This season with the Lightning, Phillips has kept the court lively and full of action. His athleticism and dedication to the game make him one of the most entertaining players to watch and definitely one of the most valuable assets on the Lightning squad.
