Of Courts, the only racquet sport specialty store in London, Ontario, not only services all of London’s Tennis, Squash, Badminton and Pickleball players, but the store also has a full selection of Volleyball equipment, something most people are not aware of.

The store is now on its third generation of owners. Two fanatical sports enthusiasts, Derek Moore and Peter Urkedal, decided to branch out in a new career direction and bought the store in March of 2015. Since then, the pair have worked hard to bring the store into the 21st century with a soon to be fully launched web store.

Peter grew up playing Badminton in Norway before moving around the world, finally settling in London where he picked up Squash. Derek played almost every sport growing up before turning his focus to Tennis through his 20’s, and finally trying Squash and becoming hooked (as many do). With this new passion, he worked hard and developed his skills and knowledge before becoming the Head Squash Professional at Goodlife Fitness in London. In 2014, he was also given the opportunity to become the head coach of the Western Mustangs Men’s Varsity Squash Team, the most decorated team in the history of Ontario University Athletics (OUA) with 33 consecutive championship titles. Derek was quick to say yes.

The team plays not only within Canada but also against schools in the U.S. The operating cost of the team is quite high due to frequent travel to the U.S.

“A lot of our trips are 12 or more hours of driving each way plus hotel costs,” says Coach Moore.

The two owners had a great idea to raise money for the Western team. They designed a custom Mustang squash racquet, with $50 from each racquet sale being donated to the squash team. The custom racquet is a great way to support the team while still getting a high-end racquet to play with or have as a souvenir. The racquet is designed in honour of Jack Fairs, the longtime head coach of the team. A legend, he retired a few years ago. Fairs’ signature on the racquet alone will draw supporters from all over North America. The racquet is a limited edition with only 100 being made and can be purchased exclusively at Of Courts.
