The London Pickleball Club started four years ago as an invitation-only group of citizens in the community who wanted to play fun and competitive pickleball games. Today, the Club boasts 72 members and hosts an annual ‘rated’ tournament that attracts nearly 200 players from all over Southwestern Ontario (this year’s tourney will run May 27-28, 2017 at Fanshawe College).
Last year, the group held its first ‘Superheroes’ pickleball tournament for ALS, the neurological disease. The event featured 64 players at all skill and age levels divided into ‘superhero’ teams for a fun day of pickleball. Through ticket sales, a silent auction, and a live auction, the London Pickleball Club raised $6,394 for the cause.
This year, it’s more personal.
With member Judy Alaszkiewicz recently diagnosed with ALS, the Club has an even larger connection to the cause, and is looking forward to the second Superheroes tournament, to be held Saturday, October 1 (8am to 4pm) at the Thames Centre Recreation Complex in Dorchester.
The event is open to the first 64 players to register (the registration deadline is Sept. 16). The day will feature tournament play at all skill levels, a silent auction, raffle and more. Cost is $35 per person, which includes lunch. Come on out and support ALS research.
