The London Lakers are a first-year franchise in the GMHL JR A Hockey League 2015/16 season. The team is owned by Cornerstone Sports Group, the same group that owns the Halton Ravens, who last season played into the 7th game of the semi-finals before losing to the eventual champions.

Since the last issue of SportsXpress, the Lakers have signed two high-profile players along with other recruits. Michael Wooley was the first player ever signed by the team. He comes from London National JR B (with stints in Strathroy and St. Thomas). Also joining the team with tremendous experience and leadership is Jacob Jammes, formerly of the OHL’s Mississauga Steelheads and London Knights. These players signal that Lakers Hockey will be successful in their first year.

Cornerstone operates a first-class program devoted to the development of young hockey players. The Halton Ravens display the level of success that we expect to enjoy with the Lakers next season. Several players have graduated from the Ravens to OJHL, NOJHL and NCAA already in just two seasons of play.

The Lakers are assisted in managing by the Bedford family (Wayne and Lyle). A long-time fixture in London hockey, they owned the original Lakers club and Senior Hockey Team several years ago. Wayne was instrumental in working with Cornerstone to bring the team to London.

Cornerstone prides itself on having the right people, with the right connections, for a committed hockey player to advance his career however he chooses: school, other junior hockey, or professional hockey. Contact any of our management personnel if you’re interested in playing or assisting the team in any way.

The Lakers will be playing out of London Sports Park on Friday nights at 7:30 p.m. and have nice indoor seating areas for perfect viewing. The team plans to be active in the community, so hopefully we will see you at one of the games or at a community event.

The Lakers will also be hosting many groups and minor hockey teams, and also plans to play a couple of home games at the local rinks of minor hockey clubs. Watch for the announcements! If you’d like to be the ‘invited guest’ to a Lakers game, contact Wayne Bedford at: w.bedford@rogers.com.
