Beginning with only six teams, the first Ontario Electrical Utility Workers Hockey Tournament was hosted by the Lambton Generating Station in Sarnia. Today, the tournament consists of 62 teams participating from across Ontario, including Windsor, Sarnia, North Bay, Sudbury, Ottawa, Kingston, and all spots in between representing approximately 12 different utility companies. The tournament runs 112 games and provides an opportunity for Electrical Utility Companies to participate in a weekend of hockey and renew friendships with other employees they have worked for or grown up with. The top three teams from this tournament are invited to the Canadian Electric Hockey Tournament, an event that brings hockey teams from across Canada to a different province each year.
Sponsored by the Power Workers’ Union, the Ontario Electrical Utility Workers Hockey Tournament chose KidSport London as their charity. Each team donated $100 to KidSport London, giving fundraising efforts a $6,200 start. With over $5,000 in raffle prizes, the tournament raised a total of $10,000 in support of the local charity.
KidSport London wishes to thank the Ontario Electrical Utility Workers for choosing the KidSport London Chapter as their beneficiary for this year’s tournament, as well as the Power Workers’ Union and Real Clean Gear for sponsoring the tournament, and the Western Fair Sports Centre for hosting the great event. With their collective help and support, these organizations are champions in KidSport’s mission of making organized sports truly accessible so that ALL kids can play.
