Whey protein promotes muscle growth

Weight training builds muscle, but the effects are even greater if you supplement with whey protein — according to a new study. Whey protein is high in the amino acid leucine, which serves as a building block for muscle protein synthesis. More importantly, it stimulates the mTOR pathway, which stimulates muscle growth, protein synthesis and cell survival. In fact, consuming a whey protein supplement stimulates muscle growth even if you don’t lift weights. The study showed that in people lifting weights, a whey protein supplement increased lean body mass more than a soy supplement or placebo. Bodybuilders should consider protein quality when choosing a protein supplement.
