Sheila Treleaven and the Middlesex Swimming club made their mark in Montreal this year at the FINA World Masters Championships, which was held from July 27 to Aug. 10. More than 10,000 athletes from 96 countries competed at the Championships, which included five different disciplines (diving, water polo, swimming, open water and synchro).
Treleaven led the way for Middlesex Swimming with impressive performances across five events in the 40-44 age group, winning three silver medals (100m and 200m fly, and 400m individual medley) and a pair of bronze medals (100m freestyle and 200m IM). Each effort earned Treleaven a new provincial record, while she set new Canadian records in all but the 100m freestyle event.
Overall, Middlesex swimmers earned 16 top 20 finishes. Terri MacDougall (50-54) was 8th in the 100m breaststroke, 9th in the 50m and 200m breaststroke, 13th in the 50m freestyle event, and 15th in the 100m freestyle. MacDougall’s 100m breaststroke time set a new provincial record. Meanwhile, Brooke Heath (25-29) had a pair of top 15 finishes, including placing 13th in both the 50m and 100m breaststroke events.
