The joy of baseball – at any age

The LMBL is an over-30 baseball league that combined healthy competition and a lot for players who love the game and get to continue playing it – including on fields like beautiful Labatt Park.

Dear Diary,

It is Monday, following the first LMBL game of the season. I am sore. A good sore, but still very sore. Yesterday was the first time I’ve used certain muscles since September 12, 2021. But despite feeling like Frankenstein this morning, boy did I miss playing baseball.

Playing catch, or even hitting in the cage before the season. Nothing compares to playing a real baseball game at one of our great parks here in London – especially when we get to play at historic Labatt Park.

I haven’t run that hard, thrown that much or wailed at a pitch like I did yesterday in a long while.

Celebrating a hit or making sure not to get to down on the swing and misses. It was just great to be back on the field.

On top of that, getting together with teammates before the game in the dugout or at the tailgate after, it was great to catch up with some guys who I have not seen since last season.

I never thought I’d get a chance to play real baseball (not just slo-pitch) after age 19, so I’m very happy there is a league like the LMBL.

Some guys even bring their kids and wives to the games, where we get the chance to teach them the ‘how tos’ or, more often, ‘how not to do’ certain things on the field.

Even though every step was a challenge this morning, I can’t wait for next Sunday already. I’ll just be sure to get there a little earlier to stretch …
