The Western Mustangs men’s tennis team finished with a perfect record of 10-0 during the 2016-2017 season en route to winning the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Championships last fall. In the final, the ‘Stangs beat the defending champs, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, 6-1.

The Mustangs have also won the C.L.T.A. Cup four of the last five seasons, and 19 times in the program’s storied history. In other words, it’s been a great time to be a Western Mustang tennis player in recent years.

This season, there were three men’s players with perfect records, going the full year without losing a singles match. One of those players, Iain Sneddon, who won league MVP honours, went undefeated in all of his singles and doubles matches.

When the hardware was handed out, Mustang OUA All-Stars were Sneddon (London, ON) and Andre Szilvassy (Burlington, ON). Cam Cross and Anthony Glavanic, meanwhile, won the Coach of the Year Award, marking the third time the pair has received the honour, having previously won in 2012 and 2013.

In the OUA final against U of T last fall, the Western men won all of their doubles matches and 5 of 6 singles matches to win in commanding fashion. Now, the team will play for a U Sports (formerly Canadian Interuniversity Sport) title in August. Stay tuned to www.westernmustangs.ca to find out how the Mustang men perform on the national stage…
