A successful research program takes teamwork. Here at Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic, we are fortunate to have a strong team – with the combined expertise to make great strides in the research community. Our Research Manager, Stacey Wanlin, oversees the all-star team, which includes world-renowned Orthopaedic Surgeons, Sport and Exercise Medicine Physicians, Physiotherapists, Nurses, Scientists, an Epidemiologist, Research Assistants and PhD/Master Students. Our goal is to help people of all ages, from recreational enthusiasts to elite athletes, stay active.

Whilst we have had many significant research studies over the years, one that deserves particular mention is the Stability Study, led by Dr. Al Getgood and Dr. Dianne Bryant – in collaboration with six Canadian and two International centres. This is a multicentre randomized clinical trial of 624 young patients treated with ACL reconstruction – with or without lateral extra-articular tenodesis (LET) – that will finish in March 2019. We have followed patients for two years post-operatively and collected clinical outcomes, functional testing and patient-reported outcomes.

The study results will be presented at the 2019 International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS) Congress in Cancun, Mexico this May. We would like to congratulate Dr. Al Getgood and the Stability team who have received the following awards:

1. Albert Trillat Young Investigator’s Award at the 2017 ISAKOS Congress in Shanghai, China for the paper submitted on the “Early Functional Outcomes of the ISAKOS Sponsored Stability Study.”

2. Selected as a finalist for the Jan Gillquist Award at the 2019 ISAKOS Congress for the complications paper titled “Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction With Or Without A Lateral Extra-Articular Tenodesis – Analysis of Complications From The ISAKOS Sponsored STABILITY Study.”

3. O’Donoghue Research Award, sponsored by the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) for best clinical paper that will be presented at the annual meeting in Boston in July 2019. This is for the primary outcome of the Stability Study: “Lateral Extra-Articular Tenodesis Reduces Failure of Hamstring Tendon Autograft ACL Reconstruction –Two Year Outcomes from the STABILITY Study Randomized Clinical Trial.”

Furthermore, we are excited to announce that Dr. Bryant and Dr. Getgood were successful in receiving a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) project grant for phase 2 of the Stability study, looking at ACL Reconstruction using Bone Patellar Bone or Quad Tendon Autograft with or without Lateral Extra Articular Tenodesis in Individuals who are at High Risk of Graft Failure. We are currently working on initiating 21 sites across North America and Europe, aiming to start recruitment in April 2019.

With the support and collaboration of London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), Lawson Health Research, Western University, and through philanthropic donations from our local community, we are able to put patients first and strive toward achieving our Vision of Setting the Standard of Excellence in Sport & Exercise Medicine.
