CIS Top 10: Seven Western Mustangs teams listed in latest national rankings

Seven Western Mustangs teams find themselves in the latest CIS Top 10 rankings, with women’s hockey, women’s and men’s swimming, women’s and men’s track and field, and women’s and men’s wrestling listed in the most recent national rankings.

 

Women’s Hockey As they head into the final week of OUA regular season action the Mustangs women’s hockey team holds onto their third place spot in this week’s Top 10 rankings. The Mustangs picked up a pair of victories this past week, with a 3-1 win over Guelph on February 7, followed by a 2-1 win over Brock the next day.

Other OUA teams listed in this week’s rankings include Queen’s in fifth, Guelph in sixth, and Toronto in tenth.

The purple and white close out the regular season with a pair of home games this weekend; facing off against Queen’s on Friday, February 13, before taking on UOIT on Saturday, February 14, at Thompson Arena. Game time for both games is set for 7 p.m.

Swimming After a successful weekend at the OUA Championships, which saw the Mustangs swimming teams take home 31 medals to place second in both the men’s and women’s overall team competition, both the women’s and men’s swimming teams are in this week’s Top 10, with the women holding onto sixth place while the men claim the ninth place spot.

On the women’s side, other OUA teams ranked include Toronto in third, Ottawa in eighth, and McMaster in ninth. In the men’s rankings, OUA teams joining the Mustangs are Toronto in second, Ottawa in sixth, and McMaster in seventh.

The Mustangs will now focus their attention on the CIS Swimming Championships, which will be hosted by the University of Victoria from February 19-21.

Track & Field After a solid performance from athletes competing at both the Hillsdale Wide Track Classic and Meyo Invitational at Notre Dame this past week, the Western Mustangs women’s and men’s track and field teams are listed in this week’s national rankings, in third and eighth place, respectively.

In the women’s rankings, other OUA teams include Toronto in first, York in fourth, Guelph in fifth, and Windsor in seventh. On the men’s side, other OUA teams in this week’s ranking are Windsor in first, Guelph in second, Toronto in third, and York in fourth.

Next up the Mustangs will split again, with athletes competing at both the Windsor Team Challenge and Spire Division 1 Invitational, with both competitions running on February 13 and 14.

Wrestling After having a week off, both the women’s and men’s wrestling teams made the most recent national rankings, with the women’s team making a return to fifth place, while the men’s team is up three spots from last week to take seventh place.

The women’s team is joined by three other OUA teams, with Brock in first, Guelph in fourth, and Lakehead in eighth. The men’s team is joined by Brock in third, McMaster in a tie for fourth place, and Guelph in ninth.

Well-rested, the Mustangs will now look to take home some hardware at the upcoming OUA Championships, which are being hosted in Sudbury by Laurentian University on Saturday, February 14.
