The Middlesex Swimming Club made waves in December at the Team Championship Division II Meet in Sudbury, achieving numerous personal bests and club records while coming home with 18 medals from the highly-competitive meet that featured more than 600 swimmers from across Ontario.

Hayden Richardson led the way individually with five gold medals. The 16-year-old took the top spot in the 50m and 100m Freestyle events, the 100m Fly, the 100m Backstroke, and the 200m Individual Medley. Also on the men’s side, Aiden Riekenbrauck, 15, earned a silver in the 200m Freestyle event and a bronze in the 100m Freestyle, while Griffin Shaw, 16, grabbed a bronze in the 200m Breaststroke and Matthew Szabo, 18, nabbed a bronze of his own in the 200m Breaststroke. Brady Fletcher (12), meanwhile, earned a bronze in the 200m Backstroke.

On the women’s side, Lucy Finkelstein, 12, won a gold medal in the 50m Freestyle event, a silver in the 100m Freestyle event, and bronze medals in the 100m and 200m Breaststroke events, while Emma Beer, 17, captured a bronze medal in the 200m Individual Medley.

A total of 40 Middlesex swimmers attended the Sudbury meet, which featured 17 teams from across the province. The club captured 18 medals overall (six gold, two silver, and 10 bronze), set 34 new club records, and achieved 67 Top 8 performances.

Overall, the Middlesex Swimming Club placed 11th, yet another improvement at the meet. The Club finished just one point behind Swim Ottawa for 10th place and scored 70.5 more points this year than at the 2013 event. The team’s 293.5 total points was broken down as follows: Men – 193.5, Women – 100.

Congratulations also goes out to first-time regional qualifier Alexis Harback.

Middlesex Swimming was established in 2007 with only seven athletes and one pool location (in London). Now, entering its eighth season, the Club boasts more than 200 swimmers at varying levels (including a masters program) and swims out of four different locations (two in London, one in Stratford, and one in St. Marys).
