The Middlesex Swimming club was busy in the pool throughout the fall and early winter, and swimmers of all ages have enjoyed much success during the season.
On Dec. 4, some of the youngest Middlesex swimmers got their feet wet at the ISS Acapulco Invitational meet in Ingersoll, Ont. Ten swimmers 9 years of age and under represented Middlesex, and for many it was their first taste of competition. Overall, the team captured six gold medals, along with four silver and seven bronze. Six-year-old Zachary Watson earned three gold medals himself, in the 25m freestyle, 25m breaststroke and 50m backstroke events. Five-year-old Grace Cao, meanwhile, earned two gold medals of her own (25m freestyle and 50m backstroke).
Forty swimmers represented Middlesex at the Border City Invitational meet in Windsor, Ont. (Dec. 8-10), which featured more than 900 competitors overall – from across Ontario as well as Michigan. The Middlesex club came home with 32 medals (17 gold, 11 silver, four bronze) while setting 17 new club records in the process. Cameron Teasdale, 16, swam to a pair of gold medals (50m and 200m breaststroke) while breaking the Middlesex club record in both events. Kathryn Ivanov, 14, also set two new club records while earning gold medals in the 50m and 100m breaststroke events.
On the water polo front, the Middlesex crew competed in the Hamilton Early Bird Tournament in mid-November, and the women’s team won a silver medal, losing to Southwest in the gold-medal game. They earned a spot in the final after earning wins against Hammer (7-5) and Hamilton (6-4). Congratulations to the women!
