The first annual London Masters Volleyball Tournament was held June 11 and 12 at Supreme Courts and was a huge success. The London Masters Volleyball Tournament is for anyone 50+ years of age wishing to play volleyball. There were 16 teams from Ontario and the United States participating, with players from Ontario, as well as Florida, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Ohio joining in the festivities.
The teams were comprised of volleyball players that have played for years and who bring that experience, expertise and their craftiness to the games. With this many veteran players on the court, the action was fast, exciting and extremely competitive.
One of the best quotes on the tournament was a facebook post which possibly best describes the event”
“To my volleyball loving friends who are interested in playing volleyball way past their youth (lol), this weekend [June 11, 12] I played in a Masters Tournament in London. I had no idea what to expect when it came to the levels of play and what it would be like. Well, the level of play was amazing and quite inspiring! These ladies and gentlemen of 50+ years were fit, athletic and awesome players. I had somehow expected it to be a little ‘rec’ perhaps … NO WAY! It was competitive, fun and intense. So, don’t put away your volleyball shoes because you think you are getting too old … go play in a Masters Tournament – but bring a good team … these people mean business!”
We are looking at running this as an annual event, and we’re hoping to encourage other cities to run these types of tournaments. This year, the women’s side had 10 teams and was won by Mav’s Moms, a team out of Ottawa, while the men’s side was won by Bump, Set, Rest, a team comprised of American and Canadian players.
