In Edmonton at the Canadian Swimming Trials (July 18-22), Maggie MacNeil once again performed well. In the 100m butterfly event, the London Aquatic Club athlete earned a silver medal, finishing 7/100ths of a second behind Olympic gold medalist Penny Oleksiak. In the 100m freestyle, MacNeil placed 4th in a personal best and club record time of 56.05s.
As a result of her continued success, MacNeil was nominated to the senior Pan-Pacific team (her first senior national team nomination). Maggie represented Canada and the LAC at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Fiji Aug. 23-26.
Meanwhile, LAC’s four swimmers at the Canadian Junior Championships in Winnipeg (July 25-29) this summer performed very well. Swimmers were Carter Buck (14), Katherine Callon (16), Lauren Campbell (13) and David Hickey (17). Between them, they swam a total of 18 individual events and set 16 new personal bests.
Carter and David each had two top 8 finishes, with Carter’s best finish (4th place) coming in the 200m backstroke. David’s best finish, meanwhile, was 6th in both the 100m and 200m backstroke events. Both Carter and David established new LAC club records, with Carter setting new standards in both the 100m and 200m backstroke in the 13 to 14-year-old age category, and David establishing a new record in the 15 to 17-year-old 100m backstroke.
On the girls side, Lauren swam in the ‘B’ final in two events, and Katherine, in her only race, swam a personal best in the 200m backstroke and improved her placing from 41st to 27th.
