The London Legion Track & Field Alliance is expanding its high school and elementary school programs, and the high sprints, hurdles and middle distance will be offered on Tuesdays after school at the BMO Centre (4:00 pm) and on Thursdays (3:00 & 6:30 pm) and Sundays (1:30 pm) at Western University.
Meanwhile, additional conditioning programs for high performance high school athletes will be offered at Medway High School on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays starting at 5pm until April.
The Legion’s children’s programs allow younger athletes to experience all track & field events. Middle distance running is offered year-round on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 5pm at the BMO Centre. Sprints, hurdles and jumping events are on Tuesdays and Thursdays year-round at Western University.
The London Legion program was designed to give busy families greater choice in times and programs. Competitions are optional too, and athletes can compete in both Athletics Ontario and Ontario Minor Track & Field meets and championships, year-round.
The program is led by several talented high school and elementary coaches, including retired teacher Bud Willis, current teachers Denise Kussner-Jalal, Sally Chamberlain, and Deb O’Malley-Jaquith, and the husband and wife team of Mark and Cheryl Steckel. The high school track program is led by Brad McGhie, Sandy Cooper-Ryder, Jamie Ryder, Linda Findley, Janet Takahashi, and Collette Tesfaye. Every coach is a former CIS or NCAA athlete.
Athletes and children can join throughout the year, with prorated membership pricing. Children’s programs are $450/year for the first child and $650 for an entire family. High school programs start at $600/year with a high performance option of $750.
Fifteen athletes from London Legion Track & Field over the last six years were selected to represent Canada at World Championship events, including the 2015 Youth Olympic Games. This year alone, over six athletes will receive NCAA Track & Field scholarship offers and potentially nine CIS offer letters. World-ranked hurdler, Lexi Aitken, has signed with Texas Christian University (TCU).
