Michael Woolley Named First Ever Lakers Captain

For Immediate Release – (London, Ontario) – The London Lakers have named the first captain in team history, selecting local Michael Woolley as the organizations inaugural captain.

The Lakers, an expansion Junior A organization in the Greater Metro Junior A Hockey League, open their season this week, including their home opener Friday, September 18.

Woolley, who spent last season with the GOJHL’s London Nationals, says he’s excited to lead his team into the season.

“I’m honoured,” said the 1994 born defender, who is a former Sarnia Sting draft pick, and Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs alumni of being named captain.

“I look forward to leading this young group of talented players into battle each night. We won’t be taken lightly.”

Born in St. Thomas, Woolley has also played Junior B for the St. Thomas Stars, and Strathroy Rockets, and played Junior A in the CCHL with the Cornwall Colts over his Junior career, which is spanning into its sixth season. Woolley also played a handful of games for the Junior C Port Stanley Sailors in that span.

“Michael Woolley has been on board since the first contact we had with him,” said head coach and general manager Jeff Zehr of Woolley, who was also the first player signed by the Lakers.

“He’s been more then helpful in recruiting, and promoting our program. We want him to finish out his Junior playing career on a high note, and our goal since that first day was to hoist the Russell Cup.”

Woolley, who currently attends Fanshawe College, will lead his Lakers against the Halton Ravens September 18 at London Sports Park for a 7:30pm game.

“London and surrounding area should be proud of our leader on an off the ice, I hope the rest of the guys in our room, all live and learn from this young man,” added Zehr.

Home Opener – The London Lakers home opener is Friday, September 18 against the Halton Ravens. Puck drop is at 7:30pm at London Sports Park, located at 99 Brookside Street in London. Admission is $8 for adults, and $5 for seniors and students, with tickets available at the door.

The London Lakers play at home every Friday night at 7:30pm.
