The 2018-2019 season didn’t start off as planned for the Komoka Kings, but you need to start somewhere, and a great lesson was learned by all during a 7-2 loss to the Sarnia Legionnaires.
The Home Opener on Friday, September 14, however, was a tremendous success. Sponsored by Mt. Brydges Ford and King of the Pigs, the festivities included pork on a bun served from 5-7pm to fill the bellies of the more than 250 fans who came out to watch Komoka hit the ice against the Strathroy Rockets.
And in that game, netminder Owen Say received his first shutout and player of the game honours after the Kings deflated the Rockets with a 4-0 win.
One of the Kings’ goals this season is to grow the fanbase to be in the 600 range. And why not? Where else can you see Jr. A draft picks, great Jr. B players, and up-and-coming hockey stars all in one place? It’s a short and easy drive to Komoka, where parking is free and the hockey is terrific.
The Kings have a number of rookies on the roster as well as returning players which have bolstered the ranks and strengthened the team – which will definitely be a force to be reckoned with this season.
On Saturday, September 30, Assistant Captain Alex Cunningham celebrated his 100th game played with the Kings (formerly the Predators), and he bulged the twine twice that evening against the St. Marys Lincolns in a 7-2 win.
This year, the Komoka Kings Hockey Club is devoting the entire season in honour and remembrance of the 16 players and staff of the Humboldt Broncos who lost their lives last season and to their respective families – as well as to the 13 survivors – by proudly wearing the Humboldt Broncos logo on their helmets.
