The London Junior Mustangs football club kicks off another exciting campaign this spring with six competitive teams donning the purple and representing our city against some of the finest football programs in the province of Ontario. As in the past, our program will be made up of youth football players aged 8-19 who reside in London and the surrounding area.
Due to heavy demand, this year the program will be adding another rep team for the summer season in the Junior Varsity division.
“It’s fantastic news for London football that we have been able to meet the demand and grow our sport,” says Dan Valente, president of the Junior Mustangs. “Our goal has always been to expand football in our region, and our track record has drawn many kids to our banner.”
This year the program expects all teams to compete for the championships in their respective leagues.
The Atom, Peewee, and Junior Varsity addition will play in the Ontario Minor Football league (OMFL), while the Bantam, Junior Varsity, and Varsity squads will continue to compete in the highest league in our province, the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL). Since our inception in 2011, our program has had an undefeated champion winning a league, or provincial title every year, most recently with our Atoms last year.
Teams to watch in 2014 include a very good group of Peewees, a Varsity squad that hopes to return the championship they won back in 2012, and a loaded and talented team at the Junior Varsity level. Our Atoms will have a bull’s-eye on their backs returning to defend their championship. The Bantam team has some very talented players who can make a difference and will be in the mix. The Junior Varsity 2 entry will represent us proudly in their first year. Kickoff for the program will be May 24 with all teams playing at home on that Saturday or Sunday. All games are played at TD Stadium on the campus of Western University.
This fall we will be offering a full tackle house league playing in our newly formed London Minor Football League (LMFL). Age groups will include Atom and Peewee practicing and playing on turf fields either at Western University or City Wide fields in south London. All new equipment will be provided with a heads-up approach, teaching skills and sportsmanship to all players. More information can be found online at www.londonjuniormustangs.com, and registrations are open. The fall season commences on the Labour Day weekend. Buckle up the chin straps, Junior Mustang football starts now!
