It’s been 21 years that the Forest City Volleyball Club has been in operation, and the organization has achieved numerous accomplishments along the way – most notably, six national championships and an impressive 20 provincial titles.
This past season, which was the inaugural year of the Volleyball Canada Club Accreditation program, saw the FCVC recognized as one of only three organizations in Canada to reach those standards.
The club prides itself on an ability to develop athletes for college and university volleyball. During the organization’s existence, more than 200 volleyball players have gone on to post-secondary programs in Canada and the United States. Meanwhile, the FCVC also values loyalty, and the club has seen countless program graduates return in coaching capacities.
Vaughan Peckham leads all members in seniority at FCVC with over 40 years of faithful service. Other members with more than 10 years of loyal service include Barry Brownlee, Jane Peckham, Lloyd Rumble, Paulette Laidman, Susan Buckman, and, of course, the man who plays Santa Claus each year at the FCVC Christmas Party: Bob Mann!
The backbone of the club comes from its hardworking executive, which features a president, past-president, VP of Administration, VP of Volleyball, Treasurer, and Secretary along with board chair people in the areas of Youth Development, Registrar, Communications, and Parent Volunteers.
Through the executive, the FCVC fulfills the club’s mission statement, ensures a fair and equitable environment, provides an excellent experience for both players and parents, and delegates as many administrative requirements from the coaching staff to administrative personnel to allow the coaches to focus solely on coaching.
Currently, the executive team at FCVC boasts an impressive 150 combined years of volleyball experience at all levels — from elementary school to the national level. The executive also maintains diversity with a near-even level of male and female members, ranging in age from 30 to retirement, and roughly half of those members have children in the program and possess various skillsets in the fields of education, private business, and corporate legislation.
