They’re a team of 11 players (seven men and four women), most of whom have been competing together for years. And for the last 10 years, the team – Everton – has been playing in the Alumni co-ed indoor soccer league at the BMO Centre in London. In 2016-17, they enter the year as the defending champions in the ‘B’ division, which marked their second ‘B’ title in the league.
The team is close, both on and off the field, with multiple family connections, including the Wright brothers, Jay and John, and they are all friends away from the pitch. But make no mistake: this team is in it to win it.
“Our goal this year is to repeat as division champs,” said Jay Wright, who has been playing soccer for 27 years. “We’re working on our consistency from week-to-week, and we’re looking to play defence as a whole, rather than just the two players in the defensive zone.”
Everton’s strengths are scoring goals, its dedication to the game, team morale, and, of course, team chemistry. And there’s plenty of that. Now it’s time to find out if this squad can capture its third division title.
