It’s a season of skill development for the London Badgers U13 team, who largely came together as a brand-new team this season, with many of the players meeting for the first time at tryouts. But while the results on the field from a win-loss perspective hasn’t been ideal, the players have come a long way to gel as a team.
“Their ability to come together as a team has been amazing,” says Jeff Keays, the team’s head coach. “Since we’re a new team, we’re trying to learn to play the game at the highest level for our age group while developing individual skills.”
The Badgers have been busy on the diamond. Starting with league play in early May in the highly-competitive Intercounty Baseball Association, the 13U squad has been battling tough teams from Brantford, Kitchener, Cambridge, Guelph, Stratford and Simcoe. The team’s home field is Stronach.
Meanwhile, the Badgers are also keeping busy on the tournament circuit. In May it was the Mississauga SW Tournament, and in mid-June it was the Trevor Barton Memorial Tournament. At the end of June, the team traveled to Monroe, Michigan to compete in the Waco Wolves Freedom Classic. In July they’re playing in the Rob Morneau Memorial Tournament in Riverside, Pennsylvania, and in early August they’re at the Ontario Eliminations in Windsor.
“We’re looking forward to playing some good teams in our upcoming tournaments,” says Keays, who has been coaching within the Badgers organization for six years. “It will be good preparation for the Ontario Eliminations [in Windsor in early August].”
