On the day before the 104th Grey Cup was played in Toronto, three CFL players travelled down the 401 to London to help educate young players about concussion safety. London Minor Football was happy to host the Brains and Brawn clinic presented by the Concussion Legacy Foundation at Centrefield Sports.
John Chick and Mike Filer from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, as well as Andrew Lue from the Saskatchewan Roughriders, led a 45-minute classroom discussion before everyone hit the field for interactive skills and drills. The drills showed the 7 to 13-year-old LMFA players safe blocking and tackling techniques. Then, everyone worked on route running and catching the football, as well as learning about teamwork.
Hosting this camp annually is a key part of the LMFA’s ongoing concussion education program, which includes Safe Contact certification for coaches, and our pre-season clinic for new football moms.
Every Sunday in the fall, over 650 players between the ages of seven and 13 learn the game of football in a fun and exciting house league setting. With a focus on teaching fundamental skills, the LMFA coaches are preparing these players for their future as high school football players.
