Football
The Western Mustangs continued their charge through the OUA, going undefeated in the regular season. In their eight regular season games, Western scored 384 points and only allowed 184 against, averaging out to 48 points for and 11 against per game.
In the playoffs, the Mustangs beat Carleton 39-13 in the semi-final and then cruised to a 63-14 over Guelph to capture back-to-back Yates Cup championships.
Western then faced the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in the national semi-final, winning 47-24 to capture the Mitchell Bowl.
The Mustangs finished the season at the Vanier Cup, in Quebec City, against the Laval Rouge et Or. It was a hard-fought game, with Laval coming out on top 34-20.
It was another incredible run for the Mustangs, and one they will look to pick up again in 2019 when the season begins August 25 on the road at Laurier.
Women’s Soccer
Western served as host of the OUA Final Four championships in women’s soccer, and the Mustangs provided plenty of excitement over the weekend in early November.
The purple and white earned a silver medal and a birth to the national championship after beating Queen’s in the semi-final. They ultimately lost, 1-0, in the finals to the eventual national champion Ottawa Gee Gees.
Tennis
The Mustangs’ men’s and women’s teams made it a gold sweep at the 2018 OUA Championships.
Both sides beat the University of Toronto, 5-2, in their respective matches to take home the victory in the year-end event.
Western also swept the year-end awards, with Andre Szilvassy being named Men’s Player of the Year, and Helen He earning the Women’s Player of the Year award.
Men’s Lacrosse
On the lacrosse field, the Western men’s team captured their third consecutive Baggataway Cup as the national champs. The Mustangs beat Brock, 9-8, in the finals to take home the title when third-year attack Tristan Simeoni scored in overtime.
Fourth-year attack Cody Ward earned Most Valuable Player honours in the championships after scoring five goals over the weekend, including two in the finale over Brock.
Softball
The Mustangs’ women’s softball team won their 11th Ontario Championship (and ninth in a row) this fall. Western beat Laurier in the finals, 17-1.
Third baseman Megan Parno was selected as the Championship MVP, while shortstop Isabella Kennedy and pitcher Rachael Jacques were All-Star selections.
