The Middlesex swimmers were at it again this spring, claiming numerous medals at the Ontario Masters Championships at the Etobicoke Olympium in Etobicoke, ON the weekend of April 2-4. In total, the Middlesex team took home 40 individual medals (18 gold, 14 silver, eight bronze), as well as seven relay gold medals. That showing earned the team a 12th-place finish out of 64 teams, an improvement from its 17th-place finish in 2014.

Sara Little (25-29) was the leading woman among the Middlesex swimmers, capturing an impressive five gold medals (50m, 100m, and 200m breaststroke, as well as 200m and 400m individual medley), and one bronze (50m freestyle). Sheila Treleaven (40-44) also dominated, coming away with four gold medals of her own (100m, 200m, and 800m freestyle and 50m fly), while Terri Macdougall (50-54) claimed gold medals in the 50m, 100m, and 200m breaststroke events, and silver medals in the 50m and 100m freestyle and 50m fly events.

Brooke Heath, meanwhile, impressively broke the Ontario record for the 100m breaststroke event in the 30-34 age group, posting a time of 1:16:78.

On the men’s side, Ben Hedley (40-44) took home gold in the 50m and 100m freestyle events, as well as bronze in the 100m individual medley. Johnny Hewerdine (35-39) claimed silver medals in the 100m fly and 100m individual medley events, in addition to three bronze medals (100m backstroke, 100m breaststroke, and 50m fly).

Bernard Volz (45-49), the former 1984 Canadian Olympian in the 1500m freestyle, earned a silver medal in the 100m freestyle event and a bronze medal in the 100m backstroke.

Middlesex masters swimming is an adult program for all levels 18 & over. New swimmers are welcome any time. Participation is the name of the game, regardless of speed or experience.
