Andrew Craven’s sports career began on the ice, as the Londoner enjoyed playing hockey in his youth. But at 14
years old, he traded in the skates and headed to the pool to begin what has turned into a long love affair with
swimming.
Craven has been coaching swimming since 1986, and he’s been doing so at the London Aquatic Club since 1992.
Now also a board of director, he has coached thousands of kids over the years within the LAC, and he’s been honoured with many awards at the local and national level.
What’s his favourite memory after all these years? There are many, but Craven says serving as head coach of the
2000 Paralympic team in Australia tops the list. That was the coming out party, the coach says, of Canada’s presence at the top of the swimming scene.
But he hasn’t forgotten about hockey. In fact, Craven has gone on record saying the Toronto Maple Leafs will
win the Stanley Cup this decade. If his hockey predictions are anything like his coaching abilities in the pool, Leafs fans will be very happy.
