A customer came into the store recently expressing concern about protein quality after reading a CBC Marketplace article about ‘protein spiking’ (sometimes called ‘amino spiking’ or ‘amino acid spiking’). This happens when an unscrupulous manufacturer adds cheaper amino acids to a protein powder in order to bring the cost of the protein down. However, what appears on the nutrition panel might then not be the whole truth.

Protein costs (whey in particular) have risen dramatically in the last few years, so it’s understandable that consumers might be looking to reduce what they pay, and unfortunately some manufacturers have cut corners to satisfy/fool those consumers.

On the positive side, most protein manufacturers remain honest, and it’s only a minority that have been accused of cheating. I say ‘accused’ because at this point nothing has been definitively proven yet.

Don’t worry, Sportmax Nutrition has your back regarding the whole protein spiking issue, but be wise when spending your hard-earned dollars on protein, because you’re getting exactly what you pay for.
