There is no shortage of great players and great teams who have gone through the Lucas Viking high school football program. But the 2014 senior team was a special one.
“In terms of blue chip, CIS talent, that squad had the most of any team I’ve ever coached,” said Mike Hayes, who led the Vikings to an undefeated season. “And in terms of sheer talent, that team ranks as one of the best [I’ve seen] in the last 15 years.”
The Lucas Vikings capped off a perfect 10-0 regular season with a pair of shutout wins in the TVDSB and WOSSA playoffs, 41-0 and 17-0, respectively, over the Central Ghosts and the Saint Thomas Aquinas Flames. And then they put the finishing touches on an unforgettable season with a 35-28 OFSAA Bowl victory over Paul Dwyer CHS at Ron Joyce Stadium in Hamilton.
Simply put, they were one of the most dominant teams to ever take the field in the London High School football league.
The 2014 Vikings featured a balanced attack on offense. Running Back Dara Sos and Fullback/Slotback Jacob Misk teamed up to lead the team’s ground game, while Quarterback Tristan Arndt, Slotback Scott Hutter and Wide Receivers Robert Clark and Josh Villani did the damage in the air.
On defense, Nick Pinelli, Eddie Nam, and Blake Reason locked down the middle, while Brett Ledingham and Scott Hutter led the Vikings in tackles. Not to be outshined by the offense, the Vikings defense allowed fewer than nine points per game.
“I’ve never seen a group more focused or driven,” said Hayes of his 2014 senior team. “The 2014 A.B. Lucas Vikings earned everything they achieved this year, and I’m so proud of all of them.”
